Dealing & Hosting A Blackjack Party
Then, you move to play the other hand and have the dealer hit you with cards until you say “stop” or you go over 21. It is theoretically possible for the player to draw 10 cards without going bust. In this case the player’s hand automatically wins, except when the dealer has Blackjack. Like many of our favorite casino games, the exact origins of blackjack are forever lost to history. When it’s someone else’s turn to deal, remove all of your chips from the rack and let them put their chips in the rack. As dealer, they may want to buy more chips to finance the game.
Blackjack’s immediate precursor was the English version of twenty-one called Vingt-Un, a game of unknown provenance. The first written reference is found in a book by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes was a gambler, and the protagonists of his “Rinconete y Cortadillo”, from Novelas Ejemplares, are card cheats in Seville.
These are considered riskier because you don’t have that flexibility with the Ace, and you could bust fairly easily. When the total value of your hand is 21 or lower, and can choose to stand and not to risk the chance of your hand exceeding 21 in total value. Also, two hands of eight are easier to play when than one hand of 16, where you have a very small chance of winning. Generally, it only makes sense to double down when your hand value is equal to 10 or 11.
A “push” happens when both you and the dealer have the SAME total value of all cards. For example, if your total is, say, 18, and the dealer has the same total of 18, then neither you nor the dealer win or lose. It’s a “push”, a sort of “stand-off” where you don’t lose, and don’t win, and neither does the dealer. If the table is designated a must-hit-soft-17 Blackjack game, the dealer must draw on all soft 17 hands until he or she obtains a point total of a hard 17 or higher. When your cards are dealt, add them up and figure out whether you want to stand with what you have or take another card. In home games, you will say to the dealer, “hit me” or “stay,” while at the casino you will use hand motions to tell the dealer what you want to do.
Most casinos offer the player the ability to ‘double for less.’ That is, they are allowed to double down without matching their full original bet. If a player does this on a winning hand , a smart player can ‘get in’ on the double by offering to pay the rest of the double amount. Most people prefer to only double for a small amount, a long term player should always offer to front the rest of the double bet, because in the long run a profit will be made.
See the strategy guide for how this affects how a hand should be played. The aim of blackjack is to get as close as possible to 21 points without exceeding 21. The points are the same as the numbers on the cards with picture cards being worth 10 points each and the Ace counting as either 1 or 11, as desired by the player. If the player exceeds 21, they instantly lose , regardless of what the dealer gets. If the dealer exceeds 21, the player wins and their bet is returned along with their win .
