While virtually every student has a smart phone at my school—and frequently own models that are far more advanced than the typical teacher’s—few have any knowledge of how to actually write software for them. The Computer Technology Club is a club that enables students interested in computers and other technologies to come together and learn more about the field with fun member-driven projects. CTC provides a space where students can work together on IT projects with assistance from fellow members. Two programs out there that fit perfectly into my plans are Global Schoolhouse’s CyberFair and Our Town.
Since alphanumeric characters are somewhat passé, we instead had the words converted into binary. It was neat to have the students explain how the secret message on their shirts was actually ASCII. The majority of clubs meet on alternate Tuesday’s of each month during an activity period. CyWatch is the FBI’s 24/7 operations center and watch floor, providing around-the-clock support to track incidents and communicate with field offices across the country. The Internet Crime Complaint Center collects reports of Internet crime from the public.
Presentations have been given by representatives from LGS Innovations, Ernst and Young, Sun Microsystems and many others. The club gives students opportunities to participate in competitions such as the ACM Tec Fest. They are also active in community services, sending packages to Iraq through the Adopt-a-Soldier program. Upsilon Pi Epsilon is BU’s only computer science honor society dedicated to promoting excellence in technical and computing disciplines. UPE at BU will help prepare members for the industry through professional development, meaningful and interesting projects, and a supportive professional network.
The FBI is the lead federal agency for investigating cyber attacks and intrusions. We collect and share intelligence and engage with victims while working to unmask those committing malicious cyber activities, wherever they are. Malicious cyber activity threatens the public’s safety and our national and economic security.
The White Hat is the cyber security and hacking club at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Our mission is to provide the tools, knowledge, skills and resources to make the internet a safer place by protecting personal computers, private data and information systems. The ACM-W WSU Chapter focuses on bringing together women in computer science and engineering so as to help bridge the gender gap and give women the resources they need to succeed in computer science and engineering. They host educational talks, bring high school groups of girls to see WSU and EECS, and hold other social events that welcome everyone. Student groups and organizations provide community and a forum to share ideas. Participation in student clubs reinforces academic concepts and gives students a chance to be more immersed in the information.
